The Greatest Pitch

Principality Building Society

Putting rivalries aside to keep grassroots growing

During the Six Nations, Principality wanted to show their support for Welsh rugby. But Welsh rugby was in a bad way. Grassroots pitches were being vandalised and left to ruin – so while others focused on the tournament, we went back to PBS’s community roots, kicking off an initiative that saw local clubs donate a part of their pitch to help save a club who’d lost theirs. Starting with Leigh Halfpenny’s boyhood club, Gorseinon RFC.

As a living monument to Wales' love of the sport, we got the whole country involved, sending packs to 100 clubs, and turning PBS branches into local 'pitch deposit' points.

And then, just as donations started coming in…… a huge storm hit Wales, destroying donor pitches across the country. Our pitch was put on hold, but everything is in place, so I guess you’ll have to watch this space…
